Orthodontics is a specialized form of dentistry that focuses on correcting malpositioned teeth and jaws. Treatment can typically last anywhere from a few months to a few years depending on the severity of the malocclusion. Malocclusion refers to the “imperfect positioning of the teeth when the jaws are closed.” (https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/malocclusion) Some malocclusions may not be severe enough to need orthodontic treatment, this is something you should consult with your dentist about.
Is Orthodontic Treatment Right For Me?
Whether you want to fix an overbite, underbite, crossbite, gap teeth, open bite, or just straighten out some crooked teeth for a more beautiful smile, orthodontics treatment at Proud Smile Dentistry is your solution!
Orthodontic treatment typically involves the installation of braces onto the front side of the patient's teeth. Braces are applied to the center of each tooth using an adhesive and remain there for the duration of the treatment (typically 1 to 3 years). From there the braces are slightly altered every 4 to 10 weeks to manipulate the movement of the teeth as needed.
After treatment, most patients' teeth tend to try to move back to their original positions. This typically takes place over several years after treatment. In the prevention of this most patients will be prescribed a retainer for the foreseeable future after braces. Retainers can either be placed permanently inside the patient’s mouth or can be removable. Removable retainers are custom-fitted for each patient's unique mouth and are typically made from clear plastic. These retainers are designed to have a tight fit in order to hold all teeth in position. Permanently placed retainers are typically just a simple metal wire design attached to the inside, tongue-facing part of the teeth, with an adhesive.
Alternatively, patients who don’t want traditional braces can opt for Invisalign instead. Regardless of which method you prefer don’t hesitate to reach out to us here at Proud Smile Dentistry and ask about our orthodontic treatment!
